Manasota Key History

Manasota Key History

1896 Englewood, named after their Chicago suburb, is founded by the three Nichols brothers (Herbert, Howard and Ira). They file the plat for Englewood, to be developed by their Lemon Bay Company.

1910 Electric power is turned on from dusk to midnight, but no lights on moonlit nights.

1919 Great Florida Land Boom begins.

1928 Tamiami Trail to Miami opens.

1933 Due to Depression, Sarasota Public Schools close except for tuition paying students.

1940 Federal census is16,106.

1960 Warm Mineral Springs celebrates 400 years.

This area is full of unusual history and events - partly due to weather and being a rare "land of opportunity". Once can not be too sure how early setterlers survivied with no air conditioning or fans to rely on and worse still while wearing clothing that is hardly climate suited (long sleeves, long skirts, etc.).
